Uno shakedown di due settimane nel sud della California, in allenamento all’RD Field, è tutto ciò che è servito al campione in carica della MXGP Jorge Prado per prendere la decisione di cimentarsi nell’AMA Supercross, destinato a fare un’affascinante apparizione cameo nei primi tre round della stagione 2024.

Esatto, il nostro fenomeno spagnolo sarà presente ad Anaheim 1, San Francisco e San Diego il prossimo gennaio, equipaggiata con la GASGAS MC 450F in quella che sarà la sua prima partenza in assoluto nel Supercross americano – direttamente nei primi ranghi della 450SX al debutto. E siamo entusiasti di vederlo!
Fresco di aver conquistato il Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross 2023 nella categoria MXGP, che è stato un risultato fondamentale sia per lui che per GASGAS con la squadra gestita da Davide De Carli, Jorge aveva espresso il sogno di una vita di provare lo sport del Supercross – e potenzialmente fare un Inizio 450SX! – negli Stati Uniti.
Da lì, accompagnato da un’ondata di attenzione da parte dei media durante la sua breve escursione fuori stagione, le capacità del talentuoso 22enne sono state evidenti fin dall’inizio mentre applicava la sua arte negli stretti confini dell’allenamento su un supercross su vasta scala.
Insieme a Jorge, al suo regolare Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team e al Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing Team, è stato deciso che gareggerà nei tre round di apertura del campionato AMA Supercross 2024 nel tentativo di acquisire esperienza attraverso una serie di drop-drop e chilometraggio di gara negli Stati Uniti durante quello che sarà ancora il Gran Premio fuori stagione.
Jorge Prado: “Da quando ho iniziato a guidare il mio sogno è sempre stato quello di correre un giorno negli Stati Uniti, in particolare per gareggiare nel Supercross. L’ho guardato per tutta la vita in televisione e ho sempre pensato che dovesse essere fantastico correre sotto le luci con una folla e un’atmosfera enormi! E più nello specifico, deve essere fantastico correre in uno stadio iconico come l’Angel Stadium. Ho avuto la fortuna nel 2015, mentre ero in visita e mi allenavo negli Stati Uniti, di andare ad Anaheim 1: è stata una bellissima esperienza e mi ha fatto venire voglia di provarla ancora di più. Quindi, dato che ho vinto il titolo MXGP quest’anno e sono totalmente in salute e alla ricerca di una nuova sfida, ho pensato che fosse il momento perfetto nella mia carriera per venire ad allenarmi adeguatamente negli Stati Uniti per prepararmi per alcune gare di Supercross. Non voglio sprecare un altro anno intero chiedendomi se potrei o dovrei, quindi sono qui e lo proverò. Non vedo davvero l’ora e ho la fortuna di avere il pieno supporto del mio Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team a casa con Claudio e Davide de Carli, e del Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing Team qui in Gli Stati Uniti dietro di me.”

Roger De Coster (Direttore degli sport motoristici, Nord America): “L’obiettivo principale di Jorge nel 2024 è difendere il titolo mondiale guadagnato la scorsa stagione, ma ovviamente siamo entusiasti di vedere cosa può fare su una pista di Supercross. Sappiamo tutti che ha molto talento, dato che è già più volte campione del mondo di motocross, avendo vinto in MX2 ed essendo l’attuale campione della MXGP. Tuttavia, sappiamo anche che il Supercross ai massimi livelli è estremamente competitivo e correre con i migliori qui richiede molta tenacia oltre al talento, quindi questa sarà una grande sfida per lui. Gli auguriamo il meglio e siamo lieti che con il supporto di TLD GASGAS siamo in grado di sostenere il suo desiderio di provare il Supercross!”

Il suo desiderio ora è allenarsi negli Stati Uniti e provare il Supercross, perché finora non ne ha avuto l’opportunità e da parte nostra se lo merita completamente. Noi, come squadra, insieme a Pit Beirer e Robert Jonas, siamo stati completamente aperti fin dal primo giorno con Jorge riguardo a dargli l’opportunità di correre nel Supercross e lo sosterremo dall’Europa! Non vediamo l’ora di vederlo schierare in A1 perché è importante per lui correre quei primi tre round per chiarire nella sua mente quale sarà il suo futuro agonistico, dato che è ancora molto giovane e può provarlo. Dopo la sua apparizione programmata in tre round nel campionato AMA Supercross 2024, Jorge tornerà in Europa e si preparerà per la difesa del campionato mondiale MXGP, che si aprirà all’MXGP della Patagonia-Argentina il 10 marzo 2024.

A two-week shakedown in Southern California training at RD Field is all it took for defending MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado to make the decision to try his hand at AMA Supercross, set to make a fascinating cameo appearance across the opening three rounds of the 2024 season.

That’s right, our Spanish sensation is in for Anaheim 1, San Francisco and San Diego this coming January, equipped with the GASGAS MC 450F in what will be his first-ever American Supercross start – straight into the premier 450SX ranks on debut. And we’re stoked to see it!
Fresh from clinching the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship in the MXGP category, which was a milestone achievement for both himself and GASGAS with the Davide De Carli-managed squad, Jorge had expressed his lifelong dream of sampling the sport of Supercross – and potentially making a 450SX start! – in the United States.
From there, accompanied by a blitz of media attention throughout his brief off-season excursion, the capabilities of the the talented 22-year-old were evident from the outset while applying his craft within the tighter confines of training on a full-scale supercross track layout.
Together between Jorge, his regular Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team and the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing Team, it was decided that he will go on to contest the opening three rounds of the 2024 AMA Supercross Championship in a bid to gain experience via a series of gate-drops and race mileage in the U.S. during what will still be the Grand Prix off-season.
Jorge Prado: “Since I started riding my dream has always been to one day race in the U.S., specifically to race Supercross. I have watched it my whole life on television and always thought it must be great to race under lights with a huge crowd and atmosphere! And more specifically, it must be great to race at an iconic stadium like Angel Stadium. I was lucky enough in 2015, while visiting and training in the U.S., to go to Anaheim 1 – it was a great experience and made me want to try it even more. So given I won the MXGP title this year and am totally healthy and looking for a new challenge, I thought it was the perfect time in my career to come and train in USA properly to prepare for a few Supercross races. I don’t want to waste another whole year wondering if I could or should, so I am here and I am going to try it out. I’m really looking forward to it and am lucky enough to have the full support of my Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team back home with Claudio and Davide de Carli, and the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing Team here in the USA behind me.”
Roger De Coster (Director of Motorsports, North America): “The main goal for Jorge in 2024 is to defend the world title he earned this past season, but of course we are excited to see what he can do on a Supercross track. We all know that he is very talented, given he’s already a multiple times Motocross World Champion, having won in MX2 and being the current MXGP Champion. However, we also know that Supercross at the highest level is extremely competitive and to race with the top here requires a lot of toughness besides talent, so this will be a huge challenge for him. We wish him the very best and are glad that with the support of TLD GASGAS we are able to support his wishes to try Supercross!”

His desire now is to train in the U.S. and to try Supercross, because he hasn’t had the opportunity until now and from our side he completely deserves it. We, as a team, along with Pit Beirer and Robert Jonas have been completely open since day one with Jorge about giving him the opportunity to race Supercross and we will support him from Europe! We can’t wait to see him line up at A1 as it’s important for him to race those first three rounds to clarify in his mind where his racing future is, as he’s still really young and can try it out. Following his scheduled three-round appearance in the 2024 AMA Supercross Championship, Jorge will return to Europe and prepare for his MXGP World Championship defense, which will open at the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina on March 10, 2024.
